What participants say

The mindful run courses are always very pleasant and help me to get out of my head into my body. Maria always pays attention to the individual needs and makes everyone in the group feel comfortable.

I always enjoy the guided meditations. They help me become aware of my thinking patters. During the training I can express my experiences and always feel being heard. After the session I feel I~ can handle stress during the day much better.

I always thought of running as something for really sportive people and therefore never went by myself. Thanks to Mindful paths courses , I become aware of my thinking patterns and learn how to overcome limiting thoughts and free myself. running for me is now a great means to find myself and become physically fit

My first marathon through nature

What a great experience: my first ever marathon, I ran the heuvelland marathon, a nature marathon over the hills of Limburg.

Up and down, through puddles and mud, sometimes the paths were so slippery that even uphill walking my feet slipped a few cm downhill again. Uphills I usually walked at steady pace, the rest I just ran. Calm, focus on my steady breath or my surroundings or simply where I put my next step.

I did 100% on nose breathing until km36, for the last 7km, I sometimes also took in a deep breath through my mouth. As my legs became tired I felt I needed this extra volume of air to keep going at the same pace.

However, it was the fact that I was nose breathing for most of the time, that I wasn’t fully dead at the end. And that I could stay relaxed and keep my thoughts how tough this all was under control till the finish line.

For me, doing this nature marathon was more of a mental thing, something I wanted to do to build mental strength and learn to cope with situations that give me discomfort. In those situations my mind usually starts taking over and makes me stop or not do difficult things to avoid even more discomfort.

So focus on a steady breath and cadence and be aware of when those limiting thoughts start rising was a great means for me to keep running. Mindfulness in running practice.

I didn’t really have a goal other than finishing. But I had a clear intention: be mindful about body and thoughts, recognize patterns in thinking and behavior and make conscious choices how to cope moment by moment.

As I maneuvered my way closer to the finish, I started feeling a bit more ambitious, like: “I can try to finish with this and this average pace” or “let’s try to cross the finish line within this time”; my mantra for the last few km then also was “keep running, don’t stop”. So e.g. when a thought came up “oh, I really don’t want to run anymore”, I talked to myself “keep running, don’t stop” and refocused my attention to breathing.

Reflecting on this journey makes me feels a bit weird and content at the same time, I have again become aware of following aspects:

  1. Nose breathing is a great means to not overdo but push your own limits without fully exhausting yourself. With nose breathing your body can regulate to the perfect oxygen-carbon dioxide ratio and supply your cortex with plenty of the needed oxygen. Your cortex needs oxygen so you can consciously think.
  2. Whenever it becomes difficult become aware of your (negative) thoughts and consciously focus your mind on your breath. Repeat a mantra that helps you think positively (again).
  3. On runs, you always have the choice to walk a bit or even to the finish line, if needed, but stopping the run at all because it becomes hard might be even more painful (unless you are injured, of cause). Try to feel if it’s really too hard or if it’s just your thoughts that make it unbearable.
  4. Mindfulness is an ongoing process, a journey towards the inside and can help you navigate through the outside world with much more calmness and inner peace.
  5. Mindfulness, in traditional sense, running or walking a great source to build mental strength.
  6. You can learn it, too. Contact me, if you want to know more about mindfulness trainings or mindful running/walking.

Namaste 🙏

About Unwind - Mindfulness training and coaching

My life has always felt like a constant rush, both literally and metaphorically. I was constantly active, rarely finding a moment to simply sit still, especially outside of vacation periods. Running seemed to quiet my busy mind, even if just temporarily. Engaging in yoga and meditation provided me with precious moments to pause the non-stop activity. For years, I endured chronic pain from a teenage accident that I tried to push aside. However, my chronic fatigue reached a point where I could no longer ignore it, and eventually, the pain demanded attention too. Despite striving to excel in various roles – as a mother, wife, daughter, friend, and colleague – I sensed an unexplained unhappiness within me. Despite having a wonderful family, friends, and a good job, something was amiss, and I felt unhappy.

I knew I needed to make a change. Was there a path I hadn't explored yet?

Gradually, an opportunity emerged when I joined a mindfulness-based therapy program aimed at helping me manage my chronic pain. I took a break from work to fully dedicate myself to this therapy, marking the beginning of my mindfulness journey. This journey led me to rediscover pure joy and delve deep into self-discovery, bringing newfound meaning and inner harmony to my life. While every day may not be filled with bliss or free from stress, my awareness of my mental states and their impact on my daily experiences has transformed. Through mindfulness practice integrated into my daily routines, I now pause, observe, learn to accept, and then move forward step by step on this ongoing journey.

Continuing onward, moment by moment, I now navigate life with a happier, healthier, and more mindful outlook.

In this fast-paced world, are you seeking your own path?

Let me guide you on that journey.
